These digital natives have never known a world where their cognitive toolkit ended at their skull. What transhumanist thinkers theorized – integrating technology to improve cognition, memory, or well-being – kids simply do. As tech CEO Elon Musk quipped, “we are already cyborgs” by virtue of our smartphones and computers, albeit with a low data rate (our thumbs) connecting brain to device. Today’s children don’t even find that notion provocative; to them, using tech as an extension of self is as natural as using a pencil. In effect, transhumanism is already child’s play – literally.

The average schoolchild’s day would astonish any time traveler from even a decade ago. Kids are engaging with technologies that sound like science fiction: artificial intelligence assistants, virtual reality worlds, and even algorithmic playmates. Far from niche experiments, these tools are woven into how children learn and play.

AI-powered tutors and creative aides: Students now get homework help from AI chatbots and personalized learning platforms. A whopping 26% of U.S. teens say they have used AI tool ChatGPT to help with schoolwork in 2024 – double the share from just a year prior. Nonprofits and companies alike are rolling out AI tutors: Khan Academy “Khanmigo” (built on GPT-4) can coach a child through math problems or writing prompts in real time, offering hints and feedback much like a human tutor. Other apps like Buddy.ai use animated conversational characters to teach languages through friendly dialogue, giving kids a patient practice partner 24/7. Such AI tutors, often embodied as playful characters with voice recognition, mimic the experience of a live teacher and keep kids engaged. The result? Children today can summon on-demand teaching assistants or brainstorming buddies at any hour – effectively augmenting their learning abilities with AI brainpower.

Synthetic companions and robot friends: Children have always had imaginary friends – but now those friends can be interactive AI entities. In 2023, Snapchat introduced “My AI,” an AI chatbot built into the social app, and it instantly became a hit among young users. In the UK, 51% of online children ages 7–17 have chatted with Snapchat’s My AI bot, making it the most popular generative AI tool among kids and teens. Meanwhile, kid-focused social robots and AI pets are entering the market – consider Moxie, the AI robot companion designed to help kids with social-emotional learning, or the clever toy robot Cozmo that recognizes your face and grows with you. These digital companions listen, talk, and respond, offering friendship or mentorship without adult intervention. The implications are provocative: some children now prefer confiding in an AI “friend” who never judges or a chatbot that’s always available, raising new questions about empathy and social development. But for the kids themselves, talking to a machine feels no more unusual than talking to a pet. In their world, a “friend” might be human, animal, or algorithm – it’s the interaction that counts.

There are even early experiments with neuroadaptive games and apps that respond to a child’s brainwaves or biodata. For example, the FDA-approved game EndeavorRx treats ADHD using adaptive algorithms that adjust as the child’s attention patterns change, essentially acting as medicine wrapped in a video game. Likewise, inexpensive EEG headbands let kids literally control games with their mind or practice focus as the game adapts to their concentration levels. Such technologies are still emerging, but they hint at a future where the boundary between “technology” and “self” grows ever thinner. If all this sounds anecdotal, just look at the data on children’s tech habits. The statistics speak volumes about how deeply technology is integrated into the daily life of the young:

Yes, you read that right – nearly half of U.S. children who haven’t even learned to speak in full sentences have a personal device for streaming videos and apps. Even among children aged 7–12, an impressive 40% have dabbled with AI. American trends are similar: about one-quarter of U.S. teens (26%) have used ChatGPT for school, and nearly half of students ages 12–18 use AI at least weekly for schoolwork according to some surveys. The next time someone says “kids these days,” remember that kids these days are early adopters of AI. VR and virtual worlds are mainstream play: One in three teens owns a VR headset, and interest in virtual reality among kids is sky-high. Meanwhile, half of all American children aged 9–12 play the online world Roblox weekly, collectively logging over 1.5 billion hours per month on that platform alone. These are not just games but user-created universes where kids build, explore, socialize – essentially living part of their lives in virtual space.

Behind these numbers lies a clear picture: children are not waiting for the future to arrive – they have grabbed it with both hands (usually sticky from snacks and glued to a touch screen). Their baseline expectations involve intelligent algorithms and immersive media. What older generations consider advanced technology, kids consider routine.

This rapid transformation of childhood has many adults unsettled. In fact, the gulf in understanding between plugged-in kids and their parents/teachers is widening into a full-on generational chasm. Adult fear and resistance are casting a long shadow, even as children charge ahead.

Ask parents about raising kids today, and you’ll hear a common refrain: it’s harder than it used to be. Two-thirds of U.S. parents say parenting is harder now than 20 years ago, with most blaming technology – social media, smartphones, screens. The generational gap extends to basic perspectives on technology. What children see as an environment, adults often see as a tool – or a weapon. For instance, 71% of parents believe that smartphones hurt children’s ability to develop social skills, yet for kids, texting, FaceTiming, or multiplayer gaming is socializing, just mediated through screens. Many teens roll their eyes at the idea that online friends aren’t “real friends” – a distinction their parents frequently make. The result is a cultural standoff: adults impose screen time limits and lecture on the value of “real life,” while young people retreat deeper into digital realms where they feel competent and understood. Every generational conflict has its symbols – and here the smartphone (or game console, or VR headset) has become the symbol of everything new and scary to the old guard.

To be fair, not all adult concern is misplaced. There are real risks in the digital world – cyberbullying, inappropriate content, privacy issues, and the addictive nature of algorithm-driven feeds. But the irony is that in voicing their fears, many adults further alienate themselves from the very children they aim to protect. A teenager with an AI friend or a preteen who prefers coding in Roblox might feel that grown-ups simply don’t “get it.” The more parents fret and ban and restrict, the more the message is driven home: the kids live in a different world. And indeed they do – a world where the future is not some distant promise but an app update rolling out next week.

After all the hand-wringing, one truth remains: children don’t ask permission to live in the future. They just live there. They adopt new technologies as naturally as breathing, often long before adults have figured out what those technologies even are. A generation ago, children had to beg parents for an internet connection or a cell phone; today, they are born into an always-online, AI-infused reality and they navigate it with an intuitive ease that bemuses their elders.

The implications are both thrilling and challenging. On one hand, we are witnessing the rise of a generation that is, in effect, upgrading humanity in real time – demonstrating how flexible, creative, and augmented human life can become when technology is a constant companion from day one. On the other hand, the rest of us are challenged to catch up, adapt, and guide these “upgraded” youths in using their powers responsibly. The future will not be about pulling kids back to the pre-digital age, but about adults learning to meet them where they are: in a world thoroughly interwoven with AI, data, and virtual experiences.

In the end, it’s both ironic and poetic that the ones heralding this transhumanist future are not silver-suited scientists or philosophizing futurists – they are kids posting TikToks, building virtual cities, chatting with AI and playing with robots. The upgrade has already happened. The children of the future are here, and they’re not waiting for anyone to authorize their reality. The rest of us have a choice: we can fear it, or we can, like them, learn to live in it. One thing’s for sure – the future belongs to the young, because they’ve already made it their home.
